The Role of Sleep in Fitness: How Does it Impact You?

Why Is Sleep Important?

Sleep is a basic need for every person. It not only affects your mental health, but it affects your physical health. Sleep is essential when you begin and continue your fitness journey. According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, the average adult requires 7 to 9 hours of sleep for the best overall health. The better you sleep, the better your mind and body can function and work to its full potential. Not getting enough sleep has been proven to make it harder to exercise. It hurts your endurance when trying to get quality exercise and makes you more likely not to get an effective workout. It is so important that even if you get a few hours less than usual, it can affect your whole day the next day.

Take Your Rest Days

Rest days are just as crucial to your fitness journey as sleep. Taking the time to give your body a break to reset is essential to allow it to recover. If you continuously put your body through stress and never let it repair, you are more likely to become exhausted and not have helpful workouts. You can injure your body if you don’t give it the time it needs to recoup.

Fitness Can Improve Your Sleep

Fitness is proven to improve sleep quality immensely. According to the National Library of Medicine, a study found that adults who exercised at least 30 minutes a day slept an average of 15 minutes longer than those who didn’t. Although this isn’t a lot of time, it does add up. If you struggle with any sleep disorders, exercise has also been proven to improve your symptoms. Exercise also reduces your stress level, which can benefit your sleep schedule and improve how quickly you will fall asleep. Exercise can improve someone’s sleep quality, but if you exercise too late in the day, it may affect you poorly, so aim to exercise earlier. You don’t need to do an excessive workout routine, either. Whatever you can do to get your body moving and be active.
